Doch der Bau der Kathedrale begann nicht vor dem 19. Jahrhundert und wurde erst im Jahr 1993 beendet.

A finales del siglo XIX, sobre la antigua iglesia de Santa María la Mayor, se comenzó a construir la Catedral de la Almudena, erigida para honrar a la Virgen patrona de Madrid. En 1883 se puso la primera piedra de este impresionante monumento, situado en uno de los enclaves más bellos de la ciudad. En 1911 se abrió el culto a la cripta.

As remarkable as it may appear, the delay in constructing a cathedral in the capital until recently can be attributed largely to the fact that Madrid was part of the Archdiocese of Toledo, which was reluctant to relinquish it.
